CST462S Learning Journal

  • What went well? What would you improve? What was the most impactful part? What challenges did you face?
Personally, I feel like I learned so much about open source software and communities. I felt like contributing back to the open source community went really well. The most impactful part for me was seeing my comments help users all around the world. The challenges I faced was seeing how there are many different devices that are used, and it was hard for me to test accessibility, usability, and performance across all of the types of devices that are available for people to use.

  • What advice do you have for future SL students?
I have a few pieces of advice that I wish I remembered, or someone told me before starting Service Learning. First, don't save everything for the last minute. You want to build good habits with time management, especially because your Site Advisor is most likely working full time, and you want to be mindful of the time they're investing in mentoring you and helping you grow. Also, ask a lot of questions! I found that I was able to learn more about the site, and my advisor by asking questions outside of just the service requirements. I asked about their interests, background, and their "why". I feel like this helped me a lot when it comes to what I want to learn and pursue in the future.
